COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
- Most teens apply to a college so they have an option ready for when they return
- It is a good idea to apply to several colleges
- Colleges have deadlines when the applications have to be completed
- These deadlines are usually in the fall while the seminaries
& yeshivas have later deadlines - Since most high schools have a Guidance Counselor or staff member assigned to assist parents in undertanding the college application process we are not including all of those
details on this page - The tasks that are necessary for both college & Israel
programs will be discussed on this page
♦♦♦♦♦
FAFSA
- FAFSA is a government program that assists you in getting scholarships for college & Israel programs
- FAFSA forms are available on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov starting January 1st
- The process will go faster if you have your high school code & the codes of the colleges
where you are applying - All FAFSA forms must be completed by March 1st
- A High School Graduation Certification Form must be filled out when you graduate
- If you did not graduate high school but instead passed the alifornia High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) or
the General Education Development Test (GED), a passing score
on either one of these tests is considered the equivalent of high school graduation.
- This application has to be renewed every year
- If you don't utilize the scholarships awarded in a given year,
you need to complete a
'Leave of Absence' report which is found on the website associated with your grant
♦♦♦♦♦
FAFSA FINANCIAL VERIFICATION
If your application is marked for verification
- Be prepared to submit current year's taxes & additional financial information
- You may lose a scholarship if you wait too long to send in what they require
♦♦♦♦♦
STATE GRANTS
- States have different deadlines for their State Grants so it's better if you do everything as
early as possible & no later than January 30th - The FAFSA website has a Student Aid Deadlines feature
- The CAL GRANTS for California
residents are detailed below
♦♦♦♦♦
CAL GRANTS
- These grants are only for California residents who will attend a school in California next year
or after they return from their year in Israel - GPA'S of B- or better must be sent in by the high school by the deadline the beginning
of March for both 4 year & 2 year colleges - If the Guidance Counselor can't send the GPA electronically then you must mail it by REGISTERED MAIL to arrive by the beginning of March
- Deadline for additional community college awards is the beginning of September
♦♦♦♦♦
FAFSA ACCEPTANCE PROCEDURES
- You will receive an acceptance letter
- Make sure you keep the original because you may need more copies
- If teen is spending a year in Israel request a deferment
