PRAYER
FOR ERUV TAVSHILIN

CONTINUITY OF COOKING
ON YOM TOV FOR SHABBAS
It is forbidden on a holiday to do any act in preparation for the following day,
even if the following day is Shabbas
- An exception is made that allows us to cook food on a holiday day for use on a Shabbas
that immediately follows the holiday - The exception is titled Eruv Tavshilin.
- If a holiday day, whether the first or second day of the holiday, falls on a Friday, an Eruv Tavshilin is set aside on the day preceding the holiday (Wednesday or Thursday afternoon), so that we will be permitted to prepare for Shabbat cooking on the holiday
Say this prayer before the holiday begins
(Eruv Yom Tov)
- Prepare a plate with a challah roll or a whole piece of matza & a cooked item
like a hard boiled egg - Hold the plate in your hands while saying the prayer below
- Store the food so that it will be edible on Shabbas
- Make sure to actually eat the food on Shabbas
Blessed are you, Hashem our G-d, king of the universe
who has sanctified us with his commandments
& commanded us concerning the mitzvah of eruv.
Through this (eruv) it shall be permissible
for us to bake, cook, put away a dish (to preserve its heat),
kindle a light, prepare & do on the holiday all that is necessary
for Shabbas for us & for all the Jews who live in this city.
