Have you ever driven in your car when it was raining
& your windshield wipers just work for you?
- The windshield was a bit foggy, so you put on the defrost
- It didn’t really clear things up, just made you colder
- Then you tried the heat but it doesn’t work either
- You continue driving trying to see through the foggy patches & get to your destination
- But you're exhausted because you had to work so hard to just drive your car safely
- How much easier it would have been if your windshield wipers worked better & your defroster
really did the job
This is what life is like often for kids, teens & adults with ADHD
They have the ability to 'drive their car' just like the rest of us,
but their 'windshield' gets 'foggy' & they just don’t have the best 'wipers to clear it up
ADHD is not about ability, it is about execution of the task
- Some children with ADHD continue to have it as adults
- Many adults who have the disorder don't know it
- Symptoms include difficulty staying focused, paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior,
impulsivity & hyperactivity.
Adult sometimes have additional symptoms
- Restlessness instead of hyperactivity
- Problems with interpersonal relationships or employment
There are 3 types of ADHD
- The most comon type is Combined ADHD with symptoms of both inattentiveness &
hyperactivity/impulsivity - Inattentive ADHD, formerly known as ADD, with symptoms of impaired attention &|
concentration - Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD with symptoms of hyperactivity without inattentiveness
People with ADHD can be amazing contributors in
- Science
- Art
- Music
- Sports
- Entertainment
- Literature
- Everyday life
ADHD is really about learning how it affects your life
& getting the right education, tools & support
to 'clear your windshield' & 'drive your car' smoothly to your destination
TIPS TO HELP YOU GET WHERE YOU WANT TO BE
- Get enough sleep
1. There is a strong correlation with sleep and focus
2. Make a bed time that is reasonable - Be kind to yourself
1. Allow yourself a safe space to explore what you do right
2. Make a list of what you do right & begin to focus on that - Breathe
1. When you feel stress, anxiety or anger, stop & take a few deep cleansing breaths
2. Simply concentrating on breathing can help your focus & clarity
ADHD is a real brain-based disorder
that if not treated can lead families to chaos
