SHIVAH CALL

Shivah is observed for the 7 days
immediately following the buriel
of the deceased family member
When you come to pay a shivah call
you need to be aware of the following
- Respect the privacy schedule that may be posted on the front door
- You do not pay a shivah call on Friday afternoon or Shabbas
- You do not ring the doorbell or knock on the door because the door is
is usually unlocked so the person sitting shivah doesn't have to get up
to answer the door
- Do not say hello or good bye
- Do not initiate conversations with other people in the room
- Listen to what the mourner is saying
- Wait for the mourner(s) sitting Shivah to speak to you
- It is a custom to not leave the mourner alone unless they are taking a
break so make sure someone else is there before you leave - When you get up to leave a house of shivah,
you stand before the mourner(s)
& say the following phrase below

הַמָּקוֹם יְנַחֵם אֶתְכֶם בְּתוֹךְ שְׁאָר אֲבֵלֵי צִיּוֹן וִירוּשָׁלָיִם
ENGLISH
May Hashem comfort your family
amongst the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem
TRANSLITERATION
Ha'makom yih'nachem es'chem
b'soch shi’are ahv'lei tzion v'yerushalayim
