WHY AM I BURPING?
Burping is your body's way of
expelling excess air in your stomach
♦♦♦♦♦
YOU MAY SWALLOW EXCESS AIR IF YOU
- You eat or drink too fast
- Talk while you eat
- Drink carbonated beverages
- Drink thru a straw
- Smoke
- Chew Gum or suck on hard candy
- Have a nervous habit of swallowing air
Acid reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
can have the same effect
- If stomach acid backs up into your esophagus you may swallow repeatedly to clear it
- This can lead to swallowing more air & more burping

YOU CAN REDUCE BURPING IF YOU
- Eat and drink slowly because taking your time helps you swallow less air
- Avoid drinking through a straw
- Avoid carbonated drinks & beer because they release carbon dioxide gas
- Skip the gum & hard candy becuse you'll swallow more often than normal
& part of what you're swallowing is air - Don't smoke because when you inhale smoke you also inhale & swallow air
- Dentures that don't fit well can cause you to swallow excess air

HOW TO TREAT
- For occasional mild heartburn over-the-counter antacids may be helpful
- Chronic belching may be related to inflammation of the stomach lining (gastritis)
See your doctor if what you think is heartburn becomes routine - Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) may require prescription-strength medication
or other treatments
