Bunions | Morton's Neuroma | Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome
BUNIONS
SYMPTOMS
- Feel sensitive, protruding bumps
- Usually at the heads of the big-toe joints
CAUSES
- Bunions are hereditary
- You can also develop them if you have low arches or if you overpronate (your feet roll inward)
- Shoes with narrow, pointy toes & high heels won't cause bunions to form but they can speed their progression
TREATMENT STRATEGIES
- Wear shoes with a wide toe box & a low heel
- Place gel pads the bunions to help cushion the areas and reduce pain
- If your bunions continue become very painful or begin to affect your feet's mobility, a podiatric surgeon can realign the joints & shave off the bunion
MORTON’S NEUROMA
SYMPTOM
- Feels like a shooting pain in the ball of the foot
CAUSES
- Pressure on the nerve tissue in the underside of the foot usually between two adjacent toes
- This pressure irritates the nerves & the area swells
- Narrow, pointy shoes can put added pressure on an already irritated nerve
TREATMENT STRATEGIES
- Wear shoes with a wide toe box & low heels
- Use anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen
- If that doesn’t work ask your podiatrist about a cortisone injection which should bring down the swelling of the nerve immediately
- If it doesn't go away, a podiatric surgeon can remove the problem nerve
TARSAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
SYMPTOMS
- You feel a burning or tingling sensation in the sole of your foot
- If the condition worsens you may feel numb & weak
CAUSES
- Doctors aren’t sure what the cause it but inflammation in the tissue around the tibial nerve may start the problem
- It causes swelling in the tissues & presses on the nerve
TREATMENT STRATEGIES
- Use anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen
- If you have flat arches (pronation), you may need orthotics which are inserts for your shoes
- If these strategies don’t work you may need a podiatric surgeon to relieve the pressure on the tibial nerve
