SIGNS OF HEAT-RELATED PROBLEMS
& WHAT TO DO
If you are caring for an elderly or disabled person,
learn the signs of heat-related problems.
Seek medical assistance for any of the following signs
& if you suspect heat stroke — call 911 or medical personnel immediately.
- Headache, nausea & fatigue are signs of at least some heat stress.
- Heat fatigue
1. Cool
2. Moist skin
3. A weakened pulse
4. Feeling faint - Fainting from heat (syncope)
1. Sudden dizziness
2. Pale
3. Sweaty looking skin that is moist & cool to the touch
4. Weakened pulse
5. Rapid heart rate but normal body temperature should be 98.6 degrees, taken with a thermometer - Heat cramps
1. Muscle spasms in the abdomen
2. Arms or legs after exercise
3. Note that these may be caused by lack of salt but do not give salt or salt tablets without consulting a physician. - Heat exhaustion
1. This is warning that the body is getting too hot
2. Watch for
A. Thirst
B. Giddiness
C. Weakness
D. Lack of coordination
E. Nausea,
F. Profuse sweating
G. Cold,
H. Clammy skin - Body temperature may be normal (98.6 degrees).
1. Pulse is normal or raised slightly=
2. Pupils may contract.
3. Urination decreases
4. The person may vomit
- Heat stroke
1. This is life-threatening
2. Immediate medical attention is required
3. Death can occur quickly when heat stroke occurs
4. Body temperature rises above 100 degrees F (some sources say 104 degrees
5. The person may become
A. Confused,
B. Combative,
C. Behave bizarrely
D. Feel faint
E. Stagger
6. Pulse is rapid
A. Skin is dry,
B. May feel hot & flushed
C. Lack of sweating
D. Breathing may be fast & shallow.
E. Pupils may widen or dilate|
F. Delirium
G. Seizures or convulsions|
H. A coma is possible
To alleviate symptoms for any heat-related problem and
while waiting for medical help.
- Have the person lie down in a cool place.
- Elevate the feet.
- Apply cool, wet cloths or water to the skin, especially the head, groin & armpits which cool quickly.
- Fan by hand or with an electric fan.
- If possible, give small sips of cool water (no salt without a doctor's approval)
- Do not use rubbing alcohol.
If you suspect heat stroke,
call 911 or summon medical personnel immediately.
Following a heat stress episode,
a person will likely feel tired & weak for several days.
Continued monitoring is important.
