Increased Thirst Throughout the Day
- One of the most common symptoms of pre-diabetes is an increased desire to drink water
during the day - Increased thirst is something that can easily be followed, tracked, & monitored
- Be mindful that if you are more physically active & are drinking more water that this is common
- If you aren't very active & are drinking near three liters (101 oz) per day, you might have high blood sugar
Increased & Frequent Urination During the Day
- Some substances make our bodies urinate at a higher frequency, such as caffeine
- However, if you haven't had much caffeine & are still using the bathroom very frequently
there is a chance you are pre-diabetic - Frequent urination goes along with increased thirst
- When there is more sugar in the blood, the body revs up its elimination process to help rid sugar from the blood
- Monitor how frequently you urinate throughout the day if you suspect this warning sign
Unusual Fatigue
- We are all bound to be tired sometime during the day
- But if it becomes chronic & lasts the entire day, there is a chance this could be a warning
sign of pre-diabetes - Diabetics tend to have times during the day when fatigue sets in due to an unbalance of
sugar circulating in the blood - Pre-diabetics are no different, but it is a definite warning to be aware of if it persists
Waist Size
- The fat around your waist is an important area for assessing risk for heart disease & pre-diabetes
- If your waist size is greater than the circumference of the hips, then there is a good chance
you are at risk for pre-diabetes - While this is just something to monitor over time, this is a good reason why following a healthy diet with fruit & vegetables is crucial. If you are overweight
- you should enroll in a weight loss program to lose weight & this alone may help prevent the
on-set of diabetes
High Levels of Stress
- Stress is a damaging state for the body to be in
- Many individuals are constantly under stress, which is a big warning sign for pre-diabetes
- Stress hormones release sugar in the body, which increases blood sugar levels for energy
- When the body is stressed, the sugar just circulates around & is never used
- This can cause the body to become insulin resistant as a result, which leads to pre-diabetes
& then diabetes
Alcohol
- Alcohol is responsible for causing inflammation throughout the body, which is a big warning
sign for pre-diabete - In addition, high alcohol consumption causes the body to release insulin with every sip,
because alcohol is a form of sugar & energy - Avoid the overconsumption of alcohol & be aware that the more alcohol the body takes in, the more likely the individual is to store fat & have a chaotic metabolic profile
Cloudy or Blurry Vision
- Vision can tell a lot about health
- When it is cloudy or blurry for no apparent reason, this means there is something not quite
right with the body - Pre-diabetics often have the symptom of blurry or clouded vision when blood sugar gets out
of hand which is why this is an important warning sign - Untreated eye problems caused from diabetes can lead to blindness
- If your vision has been changing recently, it might be a good time to get a checkup from a qualified healthcare provider to see if pre-diabetes affects you
Slow Wound Healing Time
- We all get scratches, scrapes & bruises over the years, but they usually heal within 1-2
weeks depending on the severity. - If you have a wound that is slow to scar over & heal, you might want to get looked at
- A slow healing wound could be a sign of infection, but it could also suggest that your blood glucose levels are a little high for what is conducive for proper healing
- Be aware of the scratches & cuts on the extremities as well as these are typically the slowest
to heal & they are usually the first to be affected
Physical Activity
- Having no physical activity is a warning sign of pre-diabetes
- The good thing is if you have been inactive for a while, you can ease back into it to help improve lifestyle quickly
- Consider 30 - 45 minutes 6 days a week of exercise to help prevent diabetes from getting to you
- Brisk walking is a great form of exercise but remember to start slow
- If you have a heart condition or other medical problem that prevents you from exercising,
make an appointment to see your doctor
