SEARCHING FOR CHAMETZ
BEDIKAS CHAMETZ
WHEN DO YOU DO THE SEARCH?
If you're home for Passover,
you do your search for chametz on Sunday, March 24th
If you are going away for Passover,
you do your search for chametz the night before you leave
HOW TO DO THE SEARCH?
- Collect 10 pieces of chametz that won’t leave a lot of crumbs
- Place each one on a napkin or paper towel & place in different areas of your home
- It’s a good idea to make a list where you placed each piece
- Some have a minhag (custom) to turn out the light & use a candle to see but it is safer
to use a flashlight - Even if you keep the lights on, a flashlight is a good idea if you place any of the chametz
in dark corners - Some have a minhag to use a feather to collect the chametz
- Say the bracha (blessing) & then begin your search
- There is no talking after the bracha (blessing) until you are done with the search & all 10
of the chametz pieces that you distributed throughout your home are picked up & placed in a bag

Chametz that will remain in your home should be sold to a non-Jew
should be bagged or closed off with tape & marked chametz
Use a Rabbi as your agent
because this is too complicated a transaction to do by yourself
