ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPOTTED FEVER
You don’t have to live or visit the Rocky Mountain region
to contract Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever 
- Cases of RMSF have been reported from most areas of the US Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma & Tennessee get at least 60% of the reported cases
- Cases have been reported in 40 out of 50 states from New York on the East Coast to Washington on the West Coast.

AVOID CONTACT WITH TICKS
- Avoid wooded or bushy areas or areas with high grasses & leaf litter
- When walking or hiking, walk in the center of trails
- Check yourself & your pets frequently during & after your walk or hike
- Talk to your pet’s Vet to learn the process of checking for ticks
- Spray all exposed skin & clothing with a product that contains Permethrin (protects thru several washings ) when you walk, hike, garden or check your pet for ticks
SYMPTOMS
ADULTS
- Abdominal pain (that seems like appendicitis)
- Chills
- Diarrhea
- Excessive Thirst
- Fatigue
- Headache (severe)
- High fever (102 or higher)
- Loss of appetite
- Muscle pain
- Nausea & vomiting
- Sensitivity to light
KIDS
- Abdominal pain
- Altered mental state
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea & vomiting
- Red eye

RED RASH
- Most people have the red rash show up 2 – 5 days after symptoms begin
- Others develop symptoms later after treatment begins
- A small % never develop a rash
- Kids will develop a rash sooner than adults
The red to purple spotted rash is usually not seen until the 6th day or later
& this is a sign that the disease is becoming severe

SEE YOUR DOCTOR
- If you develop a rash or become sick after a tick bite
- Patients who are treated early may recover quickly on outpatient medication
- Those who experience a more severe course may require intravenous antibiotics, prolonged hospitalization or intensive care
- If possible, take the tick along with you to your doctor's office for lab testing
RMSF is a serious illness if not treated correctly
even in previously healthy people
