THAWING SAFETY
MEAT & POULTRY
REFRIGERATOR
This is the safest way to go if you can plan ahead
- Transfer the food from the freezer to the refrigerator
the night
before you plan to cook the food - Allow 24 hours for 1 - 2 lbs of frozen meat or poultry
- You may keep ground beef or poultry for up to 2 days safely
- You may safely keep red meat from 3 – 5 days
COLD WATER BATH
This plan is when you don’t have 24 hours to defrost in the refrigerator
- Fill up a kitchen tub with cold water
- Make sure your meat or poultry is in a sealed leak-proof bag
otherwise bacteria will seep in - Place meat or poultry into the cold water
- A small package of meat thaws in 1 hour
- It will take 2 – 3 hours for 3 – 4 lbs to thaw
- This method works with frozen fish also
MICROWAVE
- Use the DEFROST setting
- Small increments of time are better than 1 long period of time
- You don’t want food to cook partially
- If food does partially cook then finish cooking in an oven immediately
- When you are satisfied that the food is defrosted
place it on a different plate or in a baking pan - If you aren’t going to cook the food immediately store it covered in your refrigerator
