CHANUKAH SAFETY
For Menorahs & Cooking
- Chanukah menorahs
A. If made by children aren't suitable for lighting
B. Often those made of wood & are exremely flamable & dangerous - Don't leave matches around
- Don't place the menorah near drapes, books or anything that might easily catch fire
- Place the Chanukah menorah on a sturdy surface made of non-flammable material such as
marble, glass or metal - Don't place the Chanuka menorahs in a location where it can be knocked over
A. By a passing person
B. By the wind
C. Or where something can fall on it - If the sleeves of your outfit are loose fitting, roll them up before lighting the menorahs
- If lighting several menorahs on a table, light the ones in the back first so you don't reach
over flames - Keep water or a fire extinguisher nearby in case anything happens
- Pets
A. Can knock over tabels
B. Hit table with tale
C. Should not be able to reach the menorahs - Keep arts & crafts kids make away from menorahs
- Never leave a lit Chanukah menorah unattended
- If you must leave be sure to completely extinguish the menorah
- In case of fire
A. Use water if using a candle menorah
B. Use a fire extinguisher, baking soda or flour if using an oil menorah

ELECTRIC MENORAHS
If using decorative electric menorahs
- Inspect all wires for frayed wires or broken sockets
- Make sure the batteries work in your smoke &/or fire detector

COOKING
- When frying latkes, always keep baking soda & a cover for the frying pan nearby
- Cover a frying pan with a frying screen to prevent grease splatters & burns
- Keep a fire extinguiser in your kitchen
A. Should be 10 lb fire extinguisher
B. Place away from stove - Do not pour water on a grease fire
A. If you do not have a fire extinguisher keep a large box of Baking Soda or flour near
B. Keep lid nearby to smother fire - Keep these items away from the stove area so the flame or burner doesn't catch fire
A. Towels used to clean up or pot holders
B. Strings hanging from wrist like bracelets
C. Long dangling sleeves can catch fire - Never leave a pan of hot oil unattended
A. The oil can ignite & cause a kitchen fire
B. Keep the handles of frying pan 'in' never hanging out off the stove where it can be
accidentally hit or bumped - In case the oil ignites
A. Don't spray with water
B. Shut the fire
C. Cover with a pan to smother the flames or use an approved fire extinguisher, flour or
baking soda - Treat burns immediately
A. Cool with cool water (not cold)
B. Call your local Hatzolah or 911
