WHY DO WE FAST ON TISHA B'AV?
TO MOURN THE DESTRUCTION
- Of the 1st Bais HaMikdah (Temple)
- Of the 2nd Bais HaMikdash (Temple)
- Other tragedies that have occured in Jewish History on this day

MEALS
BEFORE THE FAST BEGINS
1ST MEAL
Should be a pareve or dairy meal with an abundance of food
2ND MEAL
- On the afternoon before the fast,
we have a meal called the Seuda HaMafsekes (the meal
of ceasing to eat) - This meal that is intended to begin the mourning of the next day
- It consists of a piece of bread & a hard-boiled egg dipped in ashes

ON TISHA B'AV WE DON'T
- Wear leather shoes
- Wear new clothes
- Wear makeup, perfume or creams
- Brush our teeth or use mouth wash
- Use the Mikvah
- Take showers or baths
- Go swimming or sit in the jacuzzi
- Have spa treatments
- Have marital relations
- Shave your legs
- Study Torah
- Greet people with 'hello,' 'hi, 'good morning,' etc.
- Sit on a normal chair
- Smoke (if you must)
- Work (if a financial hardship consult your Rabbi)

FASTING EXCEPTIONS
- Girl 11 & under
- Boys 12 & under
- A woman who has given birth within 30 days
- A woman who is due to give birth within 7 days
- When a doctor advises against fasting for health reasons such as
1. Serious illness at any age
2. Pregnant & nursing women
3. Senior Citizens
Those who can't fast
should
only eat what is required to sustain their health
