EREV YOM KIPPUR
Tuesday, September 18th
- Men who are in shul say a shortened Selichos before Morning Prayers (Shacharis)
& Avinu Malkeinu is recited. - Tachanun, Lamnatzeach & Mizmor L'Todah is not said.
- Those who did not do the Release of Vows (Hatarat Nedarim) on Erev Rosh Hashana
do it on this day. - There is a mitzvah to have a festive meal (Seudah) on this day .
- Some have two festive means (Seudos) one in the morning & another after the Afternoon Service (Mincha).
- Men go to the Mikvah in the afternoon.
- A prayer asking forgiveness (Kapparos) is done either with chickens or money &
can be found in the beginning of your Yom Kippur Machzor. - You light Memorial (Yahrzeit) Candle(s) for your parents if they are no longer alive .

YOM KIPPUR PROHIBITIONS
The five prohibited pleasures on Yom Kippur are
- Eating & drinking
- Washing your face & body
- Putting on face wash, make up & lipstick, deodorant, perfumes, hand lotion, etc
- Marital relations
- Wearing leather shoes

CANDLE LIGHTING

- The father does the regular Friday night brachas for the children
- Then you go to shul on time for Kol Nidre

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YOM KIPPUR PRAYERS
PRAYERS OF REPENTENCE
Yom Kippur is designated as a day set aside for repentence
Specific prayers
that help us confess our sins are included in the Shemoneh Esrei
& are said again when the Chazan
repeats the Shemoneh Esrei
- 'Ashamnu' - we take our fist & pound on our heart for each word
- 'Al Chet' - we also take our fist & pound on our hear for each 'Al Chet' phrase

PRAYERS OF FORGIVENESS
- 'Shma Koleinu' is led by the Chazan in his repetition of the Shmona Esrei
- 'Avinu Malkenu' which is normally said 4 times on Yom Kippur, is only said at the last service
of Yom Kippur - Ni'ilah - because Yom Kippur falls on Shabbas.

MEMORIAL PRAYER (YIZKOR)
- The Memorial Prayer, Yizkor, is recited before the Aditional Service (Musaf)
- Those who do not say this prayer usually step outside
HAVDALAH
- Havdolah is said when Yom Kippur is over
- The bracha (blessing) of 'Borei Morei Ha'aish' must be said over a flame that was burning during Yom Kippur
