HIGH HOLIDAYS 2018
SCHEDULE WITH DETAILS
Page 1
It is a minhag (custom) during the entire High Holiday period
to be extremely patient, forgiving & sensitive to others
We are supposed to curtail our anger, arguments & criticisms
How can we ask G-d for forgiveness, compassion & patience,
if we can't act this way towards those who we interact with daily?

Even in Israel Rosh Hoshana is celebrated for 2 days.

TSOM GEDALIAH
Wednesday, September 12th
A fast day
- This fast is usually observed the day after Rosh Hashana
- We don't fast on Shabbas except on Yom Kippur
- So this year it is postponed until Sunday
Why do we fast?
- When the Babylonians destroyed the first Temple (Bais Hamikdash) they allowed the
farmers to remain on the land to continue cultivating the land - The Babylonians appointed a Jew, Gedalia ben Achikam, as Governor
- Another Jew assassinated Gedalia
- The remaining Jews feared retribution from the Babylonians
- For this reason they fled Jerusalem which meant that all Jews were now in exile

SHABBAS OF REPENTANCE
SHABBAS SHUVA
Saturday, September 15th
- The Shabbas prayers are basically the same as they are every week
- There are several additional phrases that you say between Rosh Hoshana & Yom Kippur
- Most siddurim have a line in English telling you to say them from Rosh Hoshana thru Yom Kippur or the 'Aseres Y'mai Teshuva' (The Ten Days of Repentance)
♦♦♦♦♦
KIDDUSH FOR SHABBAS
