ROSH HASHANA
EXPLAINED
Rosh Hashana , the Jewish New Year,
is a time of great celebration & some trepidation.
- It's 2 days that we celebrate our creation
- We evaluate ourselves
1. We review the choices we have made of the past year
2. We think about our actions & our intentions
SYNAGOGUE
- If you aren't a member of a synagogue, you could purchase tickets in advance
- There are also synagogues & Jewish institutions who offer free services
but you'll
have to lookl to find them
PRAYER BOOK
- The prayer book for the holidays is called the machzor
- Several companies have machzorim with each page in hebrew on the right & english
pages on the left
PRAYERS WE READ ON ROSH HASHANA
- Some of the pages are similar to other weekday or Shabbas service
- However many of the prages are unique
- Several of these prayers are repeated later on Yom Kippur
- The most famous part of Rosh Hoshana services is the blowing of the shofar
- The most famous prayers are the 'Unesanka Tokef' & 'Avinu Malkeinu'
SHOFAR
- A shofar is a ram's horn
- It's blown like a trumpet every day in the Jewish month of Elul that leads up to Rosh Hashana
1. We also have someone blow the shofar during Rosh Hashona services
2. It's also used at the end of Yom Kippur - The four sounds of the shofar - tekiah, shevarim, teruah & tekiah gedolah remind people
of a crying voice - Hearing the shofar's call is a reminder for us to look inward & repend for the sins of the
past year
TORAH READING
On the 1st day of Rosh Hashanah
HOW WE GREET PEOPLE ON ROSH HASHANA
- 'Shana Tova' means Have a Good Year! OR Happy New Year!
- Some use a similar expression 'L'Shana Tova Umesukah' which means For A Good &
Sweet Year - G'mar Hasima Tova means 'A Good Signing & Sealing
- These greetings are said from Rash Hashana thru Yom Kippur
- This is because on Rosh Hashana our fates are written or inscribed in the Book of Life
& on Yom Kippur we are sealed in it
TASHLICH
- On the first day of Rosh Hashana, people who live near an ocean, river or fish pond find a
body of water for the Tashlich ceremony - If you have neither of the water places near you, then it is acceptable to go to any one of
them between Rosh Hashana until Yom Kippur - For the Tashlich ceremony, we symbolically cast off our sins by throwing pieces of bread
into the water - The Tashlich prayer should be in your machzor
FOOD
- Traditionally, Jews eat sweet foods like apples, honey & tzimmes to symbolize a sweet
new year - Challah is usually round as a reminder of the never-ending cycle of life
- Brisket & chicken are usually the main dish but those who can't have meat or chicken have
fish or vegan food - Visit our 2 pages of Brachas For Special Foods
