INTRODUCTION
TO KEEPING KOSHER
The word Kosher refers to a set of rules
from the bible (5 books of Moses) regarding food & food preparation
- When food is prepared according to these rules it is kosher.
- Those who observe the rules of keeping kosher have a kosher home.
WHICH FOODS CAN BE EATEN
- We may eat from animals that chew their cud & have split hooves who have been
slaughtered & go through the koshering process according to the biblical rules.
- There are at least 20 different species of birds that can’t be eaten but Chicken, Turkey,
Duck & Goose can be eaten if slaughtered properly & go through the koshering process
according to the biblical rules.
- Fish must have fins & scales so that means we can’t eat any shellfish like lobster, shrimp, oysters & clams.

THERE ARE RULES ABOUT
WHAT
WE CAN'T DO
- We can't cook non-kosher food together with kosher food.
- We can't cook meat together with dairy products.
- We can't eat dairy foods on meat plates.
- We can't eat meat foods on dairy plates.
- We can't fill a dishwasher with both dairy & meat plates or silverware.

WE CAN
- Cook dairy products & pareve items that don’t have meat or dairy products like fruits, vegetables, grains & baking ingredients.
- Avoid mixing milk & meat kitchen ware by having a dairy sink, dishwasher &
oven plus a meat sink - If you can’t afford this type of kitchen set up.
1. You can have different color dish tubs to wash your dishes.
2. Use your 1 dishwasher for either meat OR dairy.
3. Use your oven for meat & use a toaster oven, microwave & stove top for dairy.

BUYING FOODS
Must have Kosher supervision by a recognized organization.

EATING IN RESTAURANTS
Only eat in Kosher restaurants that have Rabbinic Supervision.
